A Record Room Can Only Be Good As You Want It To Be

Posted in 78 RPM Care, Have Your Say, My 78 RPM Collection with tags , , , on May 4, 2014 by the78rpmrecordspins

Unless you have lots of money at your fingertips, your record room will seem to be very ordinary. I like to think of it as something else-my own personal venture into the past, like being in an after hours club full of Jazz musicians jamming together. My personal dream, which I hope to become a reality in the near future, is to haveĀ framed records hanging on the walls, along with a trombone, saxophone, cornet, trumpet, and clarinet. A few street signs that name famous Jazz landmarks in New York, Chicago, and New Orleans, would be a nice touch. There will be shelving from one end of the room to the next, to hold 30,000 78’s. A bookshelf to hold discographies, and reference books will be added, along with chairs and a table, for guests to relax, and enjoy the music. Eventually, I want to acquire a couple of gramophones to make the room look nostalgic. What does your record room look like? Send me your pictures, and details, and I will post them.

Posted in General Announcements, Have Your Say, Welcome to the78rpmrecordspin! with tags , on February 8, 2014 by the78rpmrecordspins

February 10th will mark the first anniversary of the78rpmrecordspins, and so far 27,000 viewers worldwide have enjoyed this site. I hope to expand the blog further in the second year, by including the 1940’s and early 1950’s. Because of the name of this webpage, I will not be including anything to do with cylinder’s. I invite your research papers, comments, and articles to be a part of this site. Please submit them to your editor for review @ kennethmcpherson@hotmail.com.

I am pleased that the reception to this blog has been good during its first year. However, I cannot plan it always on my own. I need your ideas, your contributions, through articles on record collecting or phonograph collecting. The 78rpmrecordspins is fast approaching its 700th posting. Please make this your community, and don’t forget we have a forum for you to discuss anything relevantĀ to the blog itself, which you can find under our forum tab on the left panel.

The Insanity of an E Bay Seller’s Pricing!!!

Posted in 78 RPM Label Discography, 78's Listed on E Bay, Have Your Say on March 17, 2013 by the78rpmrecordspins

Just this morning I was looking at the new 78 rpm records listed on E Bay and could not believe my eyes when I came across an e bay seller asking $12,295.00 for a 1933 picture disc of Adolph Hitler. It may be rare but I am of the opinion that the price is over inflated. Look for yourself and tell me what you think:

Why I Collect 78 RPM Records by Ken McPherson

Posted in Have Your Say, Welcome to the78rpmrecordspin! with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 2, 2013 by the78rpmrecordspins

I suppose my interest in music from the 1920’s and 1930’s began, Ā some 30 years ago, when I bought an LP of Bobby Hackett, not knowing at the time, I would be put in a trance by his deep melodic cornet and trumpet playing style. At the same time, I was unaware that my apartment was directly below that of the greatest authority on Jack Teagarden in the world, Joe Showler. He heard me playing my music, and invited me up to listen to his collection of Teagarden 78’s. I was fascinated by his collection-there were 16″ Ā transcriptions, newspaper articles, a massive film collection, LP’s on Teagarden, etc.Ā From that moment on, I regarded the sound of that era as real music, and have never looked back.

He later introduced me to a group of collector’s in the Toronto area, who gathered every so often to play Jazz and Ragtime 78’s, and discuss the in’s and out’s of who were on the records, and often said Brian Rust was wrong! He guided me in how to build my first collection of 78’s, which later had to be sold when I got married and had children. Some 20 years have pasted since then, and three years ago I got the bug to collect again.

Ā

Today I have more that 2000 78’s in my collection, spanning 1918-1939. I collect Dance Bands with Hot Solos. and Jazz. Oh yes, it is Saturday…I am off to get more records!
