What a slammin’ battle this must have been! Fletcher’s “Chinatown…” vs Missourians “Some of These Days” (with Cab) from this same year. Not to mention Fletcher vs Ellington vs McKinney’s… or the Missourians vs Moten (with Basie/Rushing)! As jazz griot/dj, I’ve recreated the musical battles btwn these and other classic jazz big bands on the radio and the real winners were/are those fortunate enuff to hear or have heard these geniuses live ‘in the day’ or on recordings left for posterity!!!
